Curiosities and Anecdotes

Known in Italy as “Pappa al pomodoro”, it is one of the flagship dishes of Tuscan cuisine. This dish was born as a wise way used by the popular classes to reuse and not waste stale bread.
It probably began to spread between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the tomato (introduced in Europe around the mid-sixteenth century) began to be used as an ingredient in Italian recipes (previously it only served a decorative function).
The fame of this dish is, however, due to the famous Giornalino di Gian Burrasca, a very popular book in the italian national-popular culture published by the Florentine Vamba in 1920. In this writing, the protagonist of the work, rebelling against the food of his college, is clamoring for Pappa al Pomodoro.
In the 1960s, another wave of success and fame arrived for this recipe. In fact, in these years, the television version of Giornalino di Gian Burrasca was broadcast iit was broadcast on Italian public television, in which the popular singer Rita Pavone sang the famous song Viva la pappa col pomodoro.
That of this dish is a truly curious story, which has allowed this small masterpiece to be widely disseminated.
